Educational Experiences Rooted in Nature

Field Trips at
Monarch Ranch Butterfly Conservatory
Field trips at Monarch Ranch are designed to be immersive, hands-on, and magical — where students don’t just learn about nature, they experience it working in real time.
This is not a walk-through exhibit. It’s a living classroom.
This is real nature, not a production.

Images shown represent Monarch Ranch during peak blooming and pollinator activity seasons. Because we are a real, outdoor conservation habitat, each visit is shaped by the season, weather, and natural rhythms of the land. Blooms and butterfly activity will vary based on the current environmental conditions, offering a unique experience every time you visit.
Field Trips for Schools, Homeschool Groups, and Large Groups
Schools, homeschool co-ops, and organized groups with 10 or more students can schedule a private field trip date.
Private group visits allow your organization to choose a date that works best for your schedule rather than attending the public family field trip days.
These field trips are ideal for:
• Schools and classroom groups
• Homeschool co-ops
• educational organizations
• nature clubs and youth groups

Family Field Trip Days for Homeschool Families
Family Field Trip Days are designed for homeschool families and small groups (less than 10 guests) who want their children to experience the Monarch Ranch field trip program without organizing a large group.
These days allow individual families to join other homeschool families for a shared learning experience in the gardens!
Families will explore the pollinator gardens, and educational stations while observing insects and native plants in their natural environment.
This option is ideal for:
• individual homeschool families
• small homeschool groups
• parents teaching environmental science or biology
• families looking for nature-based learning experiences
What your group Will Experience
Each field trip includes a guided walk-through educational tour of our butterfly garden and surrounding habitats, led by knowledgeable guides who tailor the experience to the age and curiosity of the group.
During the tour, students will:
• Explore real-life ecosystems and learn how they function together
• Identify native South Carolina plants and insects
• Learn how ecosystems are structured and why native species matter
• Observe insects in their natural habitats — sometimes catching and examining them briefly for learning purposes
• View insects up close, occasionally using magnification or microscopes
• Butterfly anatomy and life cycles
• Butterflies native to South Carolina
• The monarch butterfly migration and why it’s one of nature’s most extraordinary journeys (discussed during migration season)
• Butterfly behavior, feeding habits, and adaptation

What to Expect by Season
Every visit to Monarch Ranch reflects what is naturally happening in South Carolina at that time. Our field trips are designed to teach the full ecosystem and how each season connects, builds, and prepares for the next.
Winter (November – February)
The hidden season of preparation
While the garden may appear quieter, this is one of the most important times for learning. Students will explore how insects survive the cold through overwintering, hibernation, and egg-laying strategies.
Early Spring (March – April)
The beginning of everything
Spring is not peak bloom—it is the foundation. This is when ecosystems begin to wake up, and what happens now determines the success of the entire season.
Late Spring to Summer (May – August)
Peak activity and visible life
This is when preparation pays off. Gardens come alive with pollinators, butterflies, and active ecosystems. Students experience the most visible interactions during this time.
Fall (September – October Peak Butterfly Season and Monarch Migration to Mexico)
Closing the cycle, preparing for what’s next
Fall is a critical transition period. What is done now directly impacts what returns in spring. Monarch Ranch is honored to be a pitstop for the migratory Monarch Butterfly for Spring and Winter migration patterns. Monarch butterflies will never be in captivity or reared at Monarch Ranch Butterfly Conservatory.

What Families Are Saying
Little hands, big wonder — and the sweetest reviews.
“This place is amazing! You will learn so much! We loved our visit and feel inspired to help save the Monarch Butterflies! They are so knowledgeable about butterflies and insects! ”
— Glenda, Garden Club President
“Our family had a most wonderful time visiting today. Sean and Katie put on a great presentation. Sean’s enthusiasm is infectious. We went for the butterflies which are amazing, however Sean knew so much about insects I feel in love with bugs in general. He reminded me of Steve Irwin, he has such passion for what he does.
”
— Wesley, Homeschool Dad
“What a fun little field trip for our homeschool kids. Absolutely recommend. I was able to purchase some host and nector plants.”
